Longer Term Rehabilitation

Some people will require longer-term Active Rehabilitation or ongoing support to maximise their independence. This may apply even after a moderate injury. Every brain injury is unique to that individual.

The skilled medical and therapy team works with clients and families-whanau, developing strategies for managing some of the very common symptoms following a brain injury. These may include fatigue, short-term memory loss, speech difficulties, mobility difficulties, behavioural problems such as anger or dis-inhibition, or other disabilities that make full independence difficult or impossible.

A key-worker, who is always an experienced health professional, is appointed to co-ordinate the person’s programme and to ensure good communication with the injured person, their family-whanau and ACC or the Ministry of Health.

Rehabilitation is built around “real life” situations in, where possible, purpose-built homelike environments. Goals are set and designed to encourage involvement into the wider community that is familiar to the person. All programs are individually tailored.
