Intensive Rehabilitation
CAVITABI is a contracted provider for ACC and the Ministry of Health for Active Brain Injury rehabilitation. Referrals are accepted from anywhere in New Zealand.
Intensive rehabilitation takes place at our specialist regional facilities based in Auckland and Wellington. The Brain is an amazing and resilient organ but, although well protected by the skull, it can take a long time to recover from a serious or even moderate injury. Research has indicated that early intensive rehabilitation can make a significant difference to the outcome.
A full specialist rehabilitation team works intensively with people who have suffered a severe or moderate injury. They work closely with the client and family to set rehabilitation goals and to improve functioning. The objective from day-one is to discharge the person as soon as possible and to enable maximum independence. Ongoing support is available on discharge.
The rehabilitation programmes at CAVITABI meet full medical and nursing needs including orthopaedic rehabilitation where for example there has been bone or other injury as well as a brain injury.
Intensive rehabilitation is a process that involves setting individual goals with the client and family-whanau. A specialist team then works progressively with the client and family-whanau to achieve those goals. Some goals are small, some are large. Some take time and much patience; others are achieved quickly and dramatically. It is a very individual process. They all aim towards returning the person to maximum independence. The team works hard to make progress and communicate effectively during the process.
There are regular meetings of the team, including the client and family-whanau, to monitor progress. The entire programme is co-ordinated by a key-worker allocated to each client on admission. This person is always a health professional member of the team. A specialist rehabilitation physician oversees the process, and is actively involved in all intensive rehabilitation programmes.
Family-whanau involvement and support is crucial for a successful rehabilitation process. This is especially important where there is a history of social or other problems such as substance abuse.
CAVITABI Rehabilitation is proud of the outcomes, sometimes astounding, that have been achieved with many clients who have used the service.
